Upper Canada District School Board

The program can range from full time English Enhancement Program to a full time Academic Credit Program all within their high school. Each student will be provided with their individualized placement plan. All new students will participate in an orientation program before the first day which covers many topics related to their upcoming school program and life in Canada. All students receive ongoing support and assistance in school and are assigned an experienced homestay coordinator to monitor the home life. An educational consultant will keep track of each student’s education plan and keep them on course to achieve their academic goals. We offer a range of optional services as part of the student assistance program (extra cost). We have also designated 6 high schools to provide enhanced English Language Support for those students who need the extra help. This includes a full time English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor available during the entire school day and who monitors progress of international students in all their classes, an ESL credit course each semester and 4 Hours of after school ESL at no additional cost.

Location
The Upper Canada District School Board is located in Eastern Ontario. The Board serves 30,000 students over a region of 12,000 square kilometers - comprised of both rural and municipal communities. The mighty St. Lawrence River forms the southern border and provides shipping vessels from around the world access to Canada's Great Lakes. The Upper Canada District School Board's region is well served by international airports in Ottawa and Montreal and is connected to the main VIA railway line providing daily service to Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and beyond. Cornwall is only a one-hour drive from both the cosmopolitan city of Montreal and our nation's capital, Ottawa. People in Eastern Ontario are friendly and involved in their communities. Our small towns and cities are vibrant and our citizens are involved in local sports, politics, clubs and charitable events. Our international students enjoy the security and the care of living with a Canadian family in a small-city setting.
Accommodation
We partner with Canada Homestay International (CHI), the largest and most experienced homestay company in Canada. Each host family is interviewed, screened, and approved by CHI staff prior to student placement. Each student has his/her own private bedroom with a suitable study area, access to the Internet and to the entire home's facilities, including meals and transportation. The homestay families will give students from other countries an opportunity to experience Canadian culture, customs, and language, and also provide the encouragement and the support required to help their students throughout their stay. Many of them are our teachers! Students are expected to become part of the family and to participate in leisure activities. Spending money is the responsibility of the student and his/her natural parents. The family contribution will come from the heart by caring for the student as their own child and making him/her feel like a true member of the family.
Our homestay coordinators provide ongoing support to our students and host families throughout their stay. They act as custodians for the students under 18 years of age and also provide the student medical insurance and airport pickup & drop off.
