Campbell River School District has about 5500 students. We have two high schools, with approximately 900 and 750 students each. Both high schools have strong academic focuses, with graduates going to a wide variety of universities, some even receiving scholarships to prestigious universities, such as Harvard and Brown. Our graduation rate is in the top 20% of British Columbia. We have a partnership with North Island College, and have an articulation agreement which allows high school students some access to college courses.

In addition, our schools are noted for strong programs in:
• Technology – computer programming, animation, robotics
• Media – video production, digital photography, journalism
• Career exploration – Co-op Placements, Work Experience, construction trades, drafting
• Athletics – soccer, basketball, football, racquet sports, volleyball, golf, track and field, etc.
• Fine Arts – Acting, Musical theatre, Band, Painting and Design, Pottery, Jewelry making
• Leadership and Enterpreneurship

The Campbell River International Programs Department offers four basic programs:
• Long-term (graduation)
• One-year Language and Culture Experience
• Short-term English Immersion (come for as little as two months)
• Summer ESL/activity program

However, because we are a relatively small program, each student receives extensive personal attention, and flexible programming is possible.

Location

Campbell River is located on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Campbell River is a community of about 35,000, with all the amenities usually found in larger centres. We have our own hospital, several museums, three recreation centres, and because we are the gateway to the North Island, we have a larger retail sector than is usual for a city of our size. Our area is renowned for its natural beauty and mild climate. With ocean on one side, and mountains on the other, recreational opportunities abound – skiing, fishing, whale-watching, golf, and dozens of other activities are available within 45 minutes of town.

Accommodation

Campbell River’s homestay placements are done by a contractor, Cross World Canada, with extensive consultation by the Distict’s Coordinator of International Programs. Host families are thoroughly screened through background checks, interviews with all family members, reference checks, drivers’ records, and home inspections. Once students are placed, the Coordinator does a semi-monthly “Check-in” with the students and the homestay contractor prepares a monthly homestay report.

Campbell River is not an ethnically diverse community, and so all students stay with “typical” Canadian families who speak English at home and who have a warm and welcoming attitude. Campbell River homes tend to be quite large, and students are provided with private rooms. In general, there is only one International student placed in a homestay, and certainly never more than one of any language group. Host families are eager to share the Campbell River Lifestyle with students, including them in outdoor activities, celebrations, and small trips.

Activities

Twice per month, Campbell River’s High school International Students participate in the district’s Activity Program. Activities this year have included whale-watching, skiing, snowboarding, hiking, swimming, skating, kayaking, and trips to Vancouver, Victoria and Tofino.

In addition, each school has a wide variety of clubs which students can enjoy. These include:
• Leadership
• Global Issues
• Outdoor Club
• Interact (a Rotary Club)
• Journalism
• Youth 4 Diversity

Sports available include:
• Basketball
• Volleyball
• Soccer
• Track and field
• Golf
• Karate
• Football
• Rugby
• Wrestling
