CAPS-I is pleased to confim that the ‘Win the World’ scholarship initiative with the State of Pernambuco will continue in September 2013. The State recently advised that the number of Brazilian students coming to Canada will increase from the 430 that came in September 2012 to 600 for September 2013. In addition to the 600 high school students coming to Canada for 1 semester, Brazilian students will also be sent to the following destinations – 200 to the USA, 200 to New Zealand, 100 to Argentina, 100 to Chile and 75 to Spain.

The student visits are part of Pernambuco’s Ganhe o Mundo, or Win the World, program, which offers improved educational opportunities, including the chance to learn English, to children from families of modest means. Overall in 2012, 1,000 students were chosen from 20,000 applicants to participate in the program, which is designed to prepare Brazil’s workforce for the future. Brazil is also preparing to host two signature global events: soccer’s World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Summer Games in 2016.

This was the first initiative to arise from an MoU signed between the State of Pernambuco and the Canadian Consortium for International Education Marketing (CCIEM) comprised of AUCC, ACCC, CAPS-I, CBIE and Languages Canada. Canada is the number one destination for Brazilians wanting to study English as a second language and is second only to France for the study of French, with more than 20,000 students, usually for under six months, choosing Canada annually. In addition, there are close to 200 agreements in place between Canadian and Brazilian educational institutions.

CAPS-I applauds the State of Pernambuco for this initiative and look forward to further developing the relationship in the years to come.

Canadian Public Schools combine strengths to deliver first ever trade mission to Turkey

CAPS-I will lead its first ever trade mission to Turkey this year. The trade mission will visit Istanbul on 8th April and Ankara on 10th April 2013. Designed to develop and empower the relationship between the two countries and increase the number of high school students coming from Turkey to learn in Canada, the trade mission reflects Canada’s ambition and commitment to become the leading destination for international education.

A diverse and representative mix of 23 public school boards from across Canada will take part in the upcoming trade mission. They will meet and network with selected Turkish agencies, delegates from the local Canadian Consulate, Embassy officials and the local media. Industry experts will accompany the school board representatives and present seminars on the Canadian education system and the student market in Turkey providing insights and a platform for discussion. The event is supported by the Canadian Consulate in Istanbul and the Canadian Embassy in Ankara.

While in Istanbul, 7 CAPS-I member programs will also participate in the Alphe Agent Workshop from April 5-7, 2013 in hopes of establishing new agent partnerships not only in Turkey but other markets around the globe.

Canada is fast becoming one of the most sought-after destinations for international study among students aged between 5 and 25. In the 2012, i-graduate ICEF Agent Barometer, a survey of over 1,000 education agents from over 100 countries, Canada was ranked the second most attractive study destination. Samuel Vetrak, CEO and Founder of StudentMarketing – the industry specialists who are assisting with the trade mission for CAPS-I – attributes Canada’s success to a combination of quality, competitive pricing and strategic support from government. The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development’s (OECD) highly respected Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) which evaluates education systems worldwide, ranks Canada third – at the top of the premier league in terms of educational results in the areas of Reading, Math and Science. Only South Korea and Finland are marginally ahead.

The Canadian government has put a clear and constant focus on education, striving to develop an increasingly relevant and welcoming environment for international students. This combined with high academic rankings and CAPS-I’s standards for program excellence is certain to make Canada a destination of choice for high school students ready to embrace a global learning experience.
